Ilja developed a clear, simple and well-organized method of improvisation. The general idea of this harmonic theory is the use of as little as possible scales and keys for as many as possible chords. The harmonic information is therefore very simple, but helps you to play over all kind of harmonic progressions, including the most difficult ones. The way Ilja teaches is based on his philosophy of putting all music-styles (jazz, Latin, classical, pop), information and influences together, instead of separating them.
About teaching principles:
Ilja is teaching Jazz-trombone and is leading the two big bands, trombone-tentet and three small ensembles at the Rotterdam Conservatory (Codarts). He is guest-teacher at The Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht conservatories.
Together with the finest classical and jazz trombone-players from The Netherlands Ilja developed a whole new philosophy of teaching. The principle of one student combined with one teacher has been abandoned. The new idea is teaching by a team of carefully chosen teachers who work together extensively. This idea has been developed to cover fields as divers as Jazz music as well as classical, rock and world music. Rotterdam Conservatory can do this because we have a faculty of five main subject trombone teachers who are teaching in Rotterdam: Ilja Reijngoud, Bert Boeren (Jazz Orchestra of the Concert Gebouw), Andy Hunter (USA, WDRbigband) Martin v/d Berg (bass trombone, Metropole Orchestra), Alexander Verbeek (Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra), Marc Boonstra and Brandt Attema (Radio Symphonic Orchestra). Besides this there is a close cooperation with Jigs Wigham, Adrean Mears, Conrad Herwig, Michel Becquet and with who ever of interest is around.
