Trombonist Composer Arranger Conductor Teacher Clinician

This is the site of Ilja Reijngoud, trombone player of The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, The Cubop City Big Band, Lucas van Merwijk Music Machine, Masha Bijlsma quintet, Izaline Calister trio and The Jasper van ‘t Hof Quartet. Ilja is leading various small groups under his own name. The Art of Two is his new duo with guitarist Ed Verhoeff.

He recorded more than 100 albums so far; he played with Herbie Hancock,  Jim McNeely, Tom Harrell, Ivan Lins, James Morrison, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Lester Bowie, Dori Caymmi, Monty Alexander, Rick Margitza, Joshua Redman, Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, George Coleman, Gino Vannelli and others.

Teacher and bigband leader at both Amsterdam (CvA) and Rotterdam Conservatory (Codarts), guest teacher at Musikene in San Sebastian (Sp). 

Winner of the Thelonious Monk Award (2003) and the Edison Award 2009,

His compositions and arrangements are played by Europes leading orchestra’s, such as The Metropole Orchestra, WDR big band, and the major military wind bands.

Ilja plays a Kühnl & Hoyer trombone (480/88 MK2) and JK mouthpieces (USA 7C) exclusively.

The Art of Two speelt The Dutch Realbook

Reijngoud en Verhoeff kennen elkaar al heel lang. Zij speelden samen in de band Nueva Manteca, bij het duo Izaline Calister & Ed Verhoeff en op elkaars CD’s. Ze willen een nieuw geluid laten horen en muziek maken die de traditionele stijlen overstijgt. Het lijnenspel tussen trombone en gitaar wordt in dit duo explosief vermenigvuldigd door het gebruik van electronica. 

Het repertoire bestaat uit composities van Nederlandse Jazz musici, van Rogier van Otterloo en Jerry van Rooyen, tot Eric Vloeimans en Michiel Braam.

Met regelmaat doen gastsolisten mee, zoals Tineke Postma, Kika Sprangers, Sun Mi Hong en Angelo Verploegen.

100 Years of Jazz

The Quartet of Ilja Reijngoud exists for over 25 years, and recorded several albums with and without guest musicians, For this concert the quartet celebrates 100 years of Jazz music, together with young vocalist Anna Serierse. The band starts with the music of  Armstrong and W.C. Handy, and takes the audience by the hand, leading to modern compositions of Hancock, Shorter and Kenny Wheeler.

Ilja plays 2nd trombone in the band. Furthermore he is arranger and occasional conductor. He recorded four albums so far with the Orchestra. He is leading and conducting the band with special projects, such as The Jazz-Influencers, and most of the Latin-projects.
